Dental exams are highly encouraged and are considered a part of positive oral hygiene. When you come in for an exam it is to ensure your oral health is in a good spot. This is why we encourage all patients to come in for an exam every 6 months - this window of time rule is frequent enough to treat oral health problems early and is the official recommendation of the ADA. At Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness we want the very best for our patients and we will be going over what to expect during a dental exam.
What To Expect During An Exam
A dental exam will typically begin with questions to determine your risk for various oral health conditions. One of the main questions we ask is if the patient currently smokes. This is important to know because smokers are at high risk of oral problems such as oral cancer and gum disease. Additional questions about brushing habits and diet may also be asked.
Once the exam itself begins, we will start with checking for cavities, testing bite alignment, and look for signs of gum disease. This is the most important part of the visit itself because it is not uncommon for patients to learn that their mouth has been compromised in some way early in their visit. Remember, it is ok if things are not perfect - this is why we do this!
The next stage of the exam is the cleaning process. We will begin by removing visible plaque and tartar. After this process is done, a powerful brush accompanied by a gritty toothpaste is used to provide a deep scrub for your teeth. Finally, the teeth are flossed and provided fluoride treatment.
If we have found an issue during the exam, we can discuss areas to improve to have a smooth checkup the next time you visit. We only want the best for our patients and we want to guide everyone on the right path towards a lifetime of excellent oral health.
You will be able to book another appointment for 6 months later while you are still at the office - making it so that all you will have to do when the time comes is simply walk in before your appointment.
Why Twice a Year Exams are Important
We encourage everyone to come in for an exam every six months. Not only will this catch potential oral health problems, but you will receive a thorough cleaning that will essentially undo months of plaque buildup. We believe that regular visits are a crucial part of oral health. If you are brushing and flossing daily, eating right, and having regular dental checkups, your chances of developing oral health problems are nearly mitigated.
