One of the most common tooth repair procedures we do is fillings. The statistics are quite high for the number of people who have cavities. Four out of five children between the ages 6 and 14 have gotten a cavity at one point and over 91% of adults in the US have had cavities between the ages 20 and 64. These are incredibly high numbers and it becomes clear why we at Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness see quite a few cavities in a week!
This isn’t all fillings are used for, however, they are also useful for repairing broken teeth from bruxism damage or small amounts of damage in general such as minor chipping. Here is what you need to know about dental fillings.
Dental Fillings - What They Are And How They Help
As previously mentioned, fillings repair teeth that have been compromised. They are one of the simplest and most affordable ways to treat teeth that have minor damage and they come in a wide variety of materials to choose from. There is something for everyone in a wide range of pricing. All of them are sufficient when it comes to daily life - certain materials may be stronger and last longer than others but there isn’t a “bad” choice.
Materials and Longevity
The most common filling material used is composite resin due to its affordability and its ability to blend in aesthetically with other teeth. You can expect up to 7 years of use with good care from this material.
A step up from composite resin fillings is porcelain. This material is more durable and closely mimics the teeth even more accurately. They cost more, but are less likely to crack under immense pressure which may save you money in the long run. Many people are perfectly happy with resin fillings - but this is something to consider. They can last up to 10 years or more with proper care.
Ceramic is also an excellent choice and is one of the longest-lasting fillings you can receive lasting up to 20 years. Like porcelain and resin, ceramic can blend in with other teeth.
Amalgam and Gold
And finally, you can choose metal fillings. Gold can last up to 30 years, while amalgam can last up to 15 years.
Interestingly, amalgam is the most affordable filling while gold is one of the most costly. If you are looking to save money when paying out of pocket and don’t mind the fact amalgam won’t blend in with other teeth, it is an excellent option and will give you a low cost for high durability. They are particularly popular for teeth in the back such as the molars. In our experience, the materials that are able to mimic teeth are requested for more visible sections of the mouth.
