Dentistry For Kids
Children develop their first teeth between the ages of 6 and 12 months and their young teeth require just as much care as the teeth of older kids, teens, and adults. At Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness we highly encourage parents to bring their child in for their first exam soon after their teeth develop, or when they turn 1 year old. Caring for the dental health of children as early as possible will contribute to a long life of healthy teeth and gums.
Services For Kids
The dental services for children are similar to the ones provided for teens and adults. The most common ones are as follows.
We recommend that everyone return every 6 months for a check-up which includes toddlers, young children, and preteens. Checkups involve inspecting the teeth to make sure there aren’t any problems as well as cleaning their teeth and teaching both the child and parents about good oral hygiene.
Cavities are common among adults and especially so with children. This is why we recommend that children receive dental sealants when they are 6 years of age to help prevent cavities from developing in the back teeth. Sealants are thin plastic strips that are bonded to high-risk teeth.
On the high chance that cavities do develop - don’t worry, fillings will typically take care of the issue. This is the most common treatment we do among children and adults. After the fillings are placed, we will talk about how to prevent more cavities in the future for perfect additional checkups!
For teeth that have suffered from decay, a dental crown may be in order. If children are reporting a persistent toothache, then they should be brought to our office. This is a sign of an infection that has reached the pulp which has to be removed, then a root canal is performed and a crown is placed on top. Children might also need a crown for damaged teeth if an accident has occurred during physical activity.
It is common for children (and adults) to be fearful or anxious when visiting the dentist. Sedation treatment is provided for children who are having difficulty with their visit.
This provides a sensation of calmness. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is a safe and effective way to ease the tension that patients may feel during their appointment.
This sedation procedure induces a state of limbo. On its own, IV sedation doesn’t induce sleep, it provides a sense of calmness and patients are generally unaware of what is happening during their visit. Once the appointment has concluded, the patient will have trouble recollecting their experience as if it never happened. They will simply be drowsy and less aware - this wears off over the course of 24 hours.
At Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness we want the best for both children and adults, that is why we want to ensure everyone gets set on the right path towards a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
