Same Day Crowns (CEREC®)
Dental crowns are excellent for restoring a smile, but some people are not too thrilled with the idea of the length of the process to receive one. This can be inconvenient if you have an important event coming up soon and you need cosmetic restoration as soon as possible. We are proud to say that at Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness you can receive a new crown the same day that you walk in, thanks to CEREC crowns!
How Are CEREC Crowns Created So Quickly?
With the help of technology, CEREC crowns are created and installed in a single day. But how does this work? After all, that is quite the speed improvement from having to wait 2 weeks for a traditional crown.
The reason why traditional crowns take longer is that they are created in a lab using data from the clinic - but with CEREC crowns, they are made at the clinic itself. These are created using a digital model of a tooth that is carved out using a block of ceramic or ceramic material. All that’s left after this process is shading the crown to match your teeth and placing it in the mouth where it is then bonded to the tooth it is on.
Are They Expensive?
CEREC crowns are thought to be more expensive than traditional crowns, but the difference is quite minor in the grand scheme of things. The crown has to be carefully created, whether it is at the office itself or in a lab and so while it might sound like a CEREC crown would be significantly more expensive than an equivalent traditional crown, they are typically only a few hundred dollars more rather than thousands.
Is There a Catch?
This sounds too good to be true on paper but surprisingly, there aren’t any glaring downsides to choosing a CEREC crown. Consider the process for a traditional crown - the necessary data is collected which is sent to a lab to be created, meanwhile, you might have a temporary crown during this period that you must be extra careful with for 1-2 weeks.
With a CEREC crown, you receive your permanent crown by spending an afternoon with us where it is accurately fitted using a material renowned for its durability and tooth-like appearance. This is possible due to technology advancements - akin to sending an email versus sending a letter.
Can You Still Choose a Traditional Crown?
You can still choose a traditional crown and there is an advantage to them when it comes to material selection. If you are wanting a metal or metal-lined porcelain crown, the only way to have these materials is through traditional means. Generally, metal lasts longer than porcelain and ceramic on their own - so having it as a base is highly beneficial in the long run. Ultimately, the choice is yours to make. We are happy to provide you with your desired selection at Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness.
