Traditional dentures take a bit of time to create and fit. This is to ensure that the patient gets the perfect fit for long-term comfortable use. Normally, dentures can take up to 6 weeks to properly fit. This is a process that consists of creating the mold after the teeth have been extracted, sending the impression to a lab where they are created and sent to the office - then the patient is fitted - usually with adjustments needing to be made before the fit is just right.
Some people are not too thrilled with being without teeth for weeks at a time and that is perfectly okay and understandable. Going without teeth can be a difficult experience which is why we at Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness offer same-day dentures for patients who are in need of an immediate smile when they leave our clinic!
Fitting Same-Day Dentures
Fitting same-day dentures works a little bit different compared to traditional dentures. The mold is created before the teeth are extracted to get an impression of the gums and teeth for immediate fitting. From there the dentures are made in the office and fitted in the patient’s mouth.
After the patient leaves with their new smile, it will take time for the mouth to heal. As the gums start healing they begin changing a bit, which results in further adjustments that may be needed. The patient may suddenly find one day that their dentures don’t fit quite right - however, we anticipate this and can schedule an additional appointment in the timeframe when adjustments are expected.
Upsides To Immediate Dentures
The biggest advantage of immediate dentures, of course, is that you won’t have to wait weeks for a set of teeth. You can begin chewing on food and confidently smiling from day one. But there are additional benefits - namely, you will be able to learn how to speak with your dentures in rather than having to relearn speaking without them and learn again to speak with them weeks later.
Should You Wait For Your Dentures Or Get Them Day One?
There are pros and cons to both immediate and traditional dentures and your needs will determine what is best for you. There is never a wrong option - this is ultimately your decision and we will help you make the best choice for yourself.
A couple of things to note about immediate dentures is that they cost more due to the process of creating them. In addition to this, you will not be able to tell how they will look in your mouth until after the teeth have been extracted. Immediate dentures are created based on impressions of the teeth and gums made before the extraction process so there isn’t too much worry about aesthetics, but if you want to make absolutely sure you are getting exactly what you are looking for, that can be a reason to think about it for a final decision.
At Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness we want the best for you and we are here to help with decisions on commitments such as dentures. If you would like to make an appointment with us or have questions, you can call our office at 704-629-8081.
