At Chichetti & Patel Dental Wellness one of the most commonly requested cosmetic dentistry services is whitening. When it comes to the appearance of one’s teeth, many people are chasing a bright smile they can feel confident in sharing. With professional whitening, you can achieve your desired smile in an afternoon! Here is what you can expect during a whitening/bleaching procedure.
How Teeth Are Whitened
The procedure done to whiten teeth is completely safe. It is all in the gel-like substance we use that provides the shade of color that people highly desire. This gel contains large amounts of hydrogen peroxide - up to 40% in fact. Comparing this to some whitening toothpaste products on the market that may contain 2% shows how large the difference is. Hydrogen peroxide is highly effective for whitening teeth and removing stains overall.
After this gel is applied to the teeth, it is heated with either lasers or a heating lamp. The process repeats until the desired shade of white is achieved. The effects are immediate, and the patient walks out with a fantastic smile, feeling both happy and confident. Many people become shocked at how effective this service is! Do keep in mind that this is typically a cosmetic procedure, so insurance sadly does not cover this service. But you can keep your teeth bright and white for years to come with our help and extra tips we can provide.
We want you to keep your new smile for as long as possible after you leave - so we’ve provided a few tips to make this happen. If you follow these important steps you will be able to enjoy the results for a long time.
Use Whitening Toothpaste
As stated earlier, whitening toothpaste typically contains hydrogen peroxide. You can make this your daily toothpaste to help fight off stains and retain whiteness. However, only use it as directed and with an ADA certification on the brand you choose.
Avoid Foods That Cause Staining
Food and beverages that cause staining won’t do you any favors for your new smile. We recommend either avoiding or limiting consumption of coffee, tomato-based foods, and red wine. Using a straw is a popular recommendation to avoid stains when drinking stain-heavy beverages. And if possible, brush or rinse with mouthwash after consuming food and beverages that are known for staining.
An Alternative To Whitening
If you are needing to have a white smile while correcting misshapen teeth - consider veneers as well! Veneers are another cosmetic dentistry service we offer and they can give you the dream smile you have been wanting. These are shells made of either resin or porcelain that go over teeth to give the desired appearance. Many celebrities use these - if you were ever suspicious about how their teeth look virtually perfect, that is likely how they achieved that look and you too can have the same smile!
