Pregnancy And Oral Health
Are you or someone you know currently pregnant or planning to start a family in the near future? Pregnancy is a busy time. In addition to all the preparation that takes place in your home, there are also a number of doctor appointments that are needed to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. Not only does your body change during pregnancy, but your mouth can change as well. Hormonal changes in your body during pregnancy increase your risk of tooth decay and gum disease. Here are some helpful tips for each stage of your pregnancy.
Pre-Pregnancy
While not everyone plans their pregnancy, many people do. If you are planning to get pregnant in the near future, it is important to schedule an oral hygiene examination and cleaning. We will thoroughly clean your teeth and check to see if any dental treatments are needed. It is important to complete any necessary treatments before you become pregnant, because certain treatments are not recommended during pregnancy.
During Pregnancy
You do not need to postpone routine oral hygiene examinations and cleaning appointments during pregnancy. If you experience morning sickness and vomiting, it is important to brush your teeth as soon as possible. The acid in vomit can cause severe damage to your tooth enamel.
After Pregnancy
It can be overwhelming to deal with a newborn, but it is important to continue to care for yourself. This is the time to schedule any treatments you postponed during your pregnancy.
